The day has been celebrated since the 1820s and was referred to in the newspapers as the "Constitution Day" from 1823. The first official celebration was in 1827. The day was celebrated in full after King Karl Johan's death in 1844. The Act of 26 April 1947 stipulates that 1 and 17 May are national holidays.
