The old port quarter of Bryggen is a complex of commercial buildings located on the waterfront in the center of Bergen, Norway.
In 1979 Bryggen was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The city of Bergen was founded in 1070. In 1360, a representative office of the Hanseatic League was established in Bergen and the city turned into an important trading center. The administrative buildings housed clerks from many European countries, especially from Germany. Warehouses were filled with goods, notably fish from Northern Norway, as well as grain from Europe.
Throughout history, Bergen has been subjected to numerous fires as, traditionally, most of the houses were made of wood. Today, about a quarter of Bryggen's buildings were built before 1702, while older warehouses and administrative buildings burned down. The rest of Bryggen mostly consists of younger buildings, although there are stone cellars that date back to the 15th century.
In January 2022, we were passing through Bergen and, unfortunately, we only had 2 hours for a walk, we decided to walk along the narrow and very crooked streets of the port quarter of Bryggen! This is a great place to take a stroll if you're short on time or don't know where to start because Bergen has so much to offer! And we will definitely come back here this year to have time to see more and of course, tell you about everything :)
About Us:
We are traveling across Norway with camper Hymer Eriba Troll 530 Rockabilly. Most of our trips are relatively short and start from Fredrikstad in Norway. For those who are limited in time, you might discover what you could see during a two-day or three-day trip in Southern Norway.
