A ship so new that its crew was still receiving training was sunk by a fortification that was 100 years old, manned by untrained recruits and pensioners, and outfitted with weapons that were 50 years old. Colonel Eriksen had fulfilled his mission and denied an invader access to the capital. The effects of stopping the German advance were immediate and significant, even though the country was ultimately captured and taken over.
