Lofoten Norway is one of the most beautiful destinations on earth and to witness 24 hours of sun there only made the Lofoten summer more spectacular. From staying at Hattvika Lodge to exploring the soccer field in Henningsvær, Norway is a place you must add to your bucketlist.

Lofoten is an archipelago in Norway. Its known for its dramatic scenery, with peaks like the Svolværgeita pinnacle jutting up into the sky. Himmeltindan Mountain sits on Vestvågøya Island. The nearby Lofotr Viking Museum features a Viking longhouse reconstruction. Cycle routes cover the islands, passing through fishing villages like Henningsvær, which has colorful buildings lining its waterways.

Why is Lofoten famous for?
Located 800 miles from Oslo and 95 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten archipelago is known for its remote, rugged beauty. Painters and authors have long drawn inspiration from the islands, which make appearances in many Norwegian paintings and the work of Jules Verne.

Is Lofoten worth visiting?
Absolutely. The Lofoten Islands are one of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe.

How do you get to Lofoten Norway?
Air travel is the best way to reach Lofoten. There aren't any direct flights to Bodø or non-stop flights to Leknes or Svolvær. The best option is to fly from Stavanger to Bodø, usually with stopovers either in Bergen, Oslo, or Trondheim, depending on air carrier and route. Travel time is typically around 3.5-5 hours.

Why is Lofoten so warm?
The Lofoten Islands have also a very mild climate although they are so North because sea currents convey warm water northward along the Norwegian coast. It is the Gulf Stream that keeps the climate so mild. The weather conditions and wind can change very quickly.

How many days do you need in Lofoten?

I recommend visiting the Lofoten Islands in 7 days. However, keep in mind that if you travel from Tromso or Bodo, it is better to add at least two more days, taking a 10-day Lofoten Islands trip.

Do you need a car in Lofoten Islands?
You don't have to have a car to enjoy Lofoten. Here's how to get to and around the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway by bus and ferry. Road trips are hugely popular in Lofoten, but a car isn't essential to enjoy these stunning islands. Ferries are commonplace and the bus network is sparse but reliable.

Where do you fly into for Lofoten?
Harstad/Narvik Airport (EVE) on the mainland is the closest direct flight from Oslo but still 3 hours by car from Svolvær, the gateway to the archipelago. Svolvær Airport (SVJ) on the Lofoten Islands is easily accessible via a layover in Bodø.

When can you see the Northern Lights in Lofoten?
The nights begin to get darker in September, which marks the beginning of the Aurora season, that lasts until mid-April. Viewing the Northern Lights in September can be more comfortable as the temperatures are still relatively high but the winter months have a higher likelihood of seeing them.

Long-sleeve or warm base layer.
Fleece or warm sweater.
Waterproof jacket / down jacket.
Thin gloves and a hat.

What is the best time of year to visit Norway?
June, July and August are the best months to go to Norway for warmer temperatures and longer days. The warmest month in Norway is July, when there's the fabled midnight sun – ideal for hiking, cycling, kayaking and berry picking. Prices will be at a premium and midges buzz (and bite) around the marshlands.

How can I get to Lofoten for cheap?
The cheapest way to travel to Lofoten is by renting a Camper Van. We found one that was especially cheap in Tromso, Norwagon, so we rented the van from there and drove it to Lofoten. The price of the Camper was 150 € per day. We rented it for 9 of the 10 days of our trip to Lofoten.
