August 27th, 2022. Stavanger, Norway
Cara Daggett, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Virginia Tech Presented with commentary by Siddhart Sareen, UiS, Norway.
Cara presents her work titled Renewable Masculinities. Through an ecofeminist perspective, this talk examines the political relationship between ecomodern and petro-masculinity, between masculinities expressed through big solar and wind developments, and those that appear in defense of fossil fuels. It does so by putting them into the historical context of imperial capitalism, which has functioned through a Janus-faced rule – the language of equality, violent domination – that continually reappears in the guise of two masculine figures, dueling but also working together. Paying attention to this gendered history offers new insights on the problem of growth, and how it relates to both energy and masculinity.
