Sverd i fjell is a monument in the heart of Hafsfjord in Stavanger municipality.
There is a car park and beach here. Every year, an annual Viking market is held in June called Hafrsfjordkaupangen.
If you are going to make the trip here, you could also visit the iron age farm / jernaldergården.
History tells that it was here that the Viking Harald Hårfagre united Norway into a kingdom in 872. The monument consists of three swords that have been set into the ground, and it stands for peace, unity and freedom. The monument was created by Fritz Røed (1928-2002), and was unveiled by King Olav in 1983.
The battle in Hafrsfjord, which the swords commemorate, was between Harald Hårfagre and all the petty kings who ruled Norway at the end of the 8th century. Although the history books say the battle took place in 872, no one knows this for sure. What you might not know is why Harald Hårfagre fought. The saga of Harald Hårfagre tells about Gyda Eiriksdatter, whom Hårfagre wanted to marry. She was the king's daughter and thought Harald was not powerful enough. If he managed to subjugate all of Norway, she was to marry him, however. And so it went.
Although Sverd i fjell is not located in the city of Stavanger, it is not far from the city and out to the monument. If you have a car during your stay, you can drive to Sverd i fjell in ten minutes from the center of Stavanger. There is a separate car park for private cars, which you reach when you drive into Regimentveien. If you don't have a car, you can visit the tourist information office in Stavanger and buy a ticket for the bus that goes out regularly to Sverd i fjell.
